The Challenge – Iroko hardwood 5-bar gate

A homeowner in Wadhurst approached us looking for a traditional 5-bar gate to secure the entrance to their property while maintaining an open, rural feel. The client wanted a gate that would suit the countryside setting, offer day-to-day convenience, and require minimal maintenance over time. Automation was important, but the overall setup needed to remain simple and practical for family use.

Our Approach

We recommended a pair of Iroko hardwood 5-bar style gates, designed to provide a timeless appearance with the strength and reliability needed for an automated system. Iroko is a durable, naturally oily hardwood that performs well outdoors, making it a solid choice for rural gate installations. The open design of the 5-bar style allows for visibility into and out of the property, while still defining the entrance and deterring unwanted access.

For automation, we selected Roger Technology above-ground gate operators. These systems are dependable, easy to service, and ideal for traditional timber gate designs. We paired this with a straightforward control setup: a digital keypad for secure entry and a vehicle road loop for automatic exit. This allowed the client to operate the gate conveniently, without needing remote controls or additional access devices.

We also ensured the gates were proportioned correctly to the entrance and that the automation system was integrated cleanly, preserving the simplicity of the design.

The Installation

The Iroko hardwood 5-bar gates were manufactured to size and installed between treated timber posts, securely anchored to withstand daily use. The timber was oiled to bring out the rich tones of the hardwood and protect it from weather exposure. The Roger Technology gate operators were fixed above ground, providing smooth and quiet gate movement while remaining accessible for any future servicing.

The digital keypad was installed at the roadside entrance, positioned for ease of use by drivers or pedestrians. Inside the property, a vehicle road loop was fitted discreetly into the driveway, ensuring the gates open automatically as vehicles approach from within. This setup offers practical control for both residents and guests, without the need for hands-on operation.

This Iroko hardwood gate installation in Wadhurst is a great example of how traditional materials and modern automation can be combined to deliver a secure, attractive, and easy-to-use entrance for rural homes.

  • James and Paul have done a wonderful job installing our two new sets of electric gates and secure fencing. We can’t rate Sussex Gate Services highly enough. They have a great work ethic and pay attention to detail and aesthetic. After-care is also good with the guys coming out twice to adjust the sensors and plug gaps in the fencing that the dog found and escaped through! We’ve even asked them to come back and quote for fencing in the rear garden. I would highly recommend this local company.
