The Challenge

The owner had a clear picture of what they wanted at the front of the property. A pair of automated swan top gates that looked right at home in the East Sussex countryside, with the warm, traditional silhouette of a swan top, but with the convenience of opening them from the car on a wet evening rather than getting out to push them open by hand. They were also keen to keep the controls as simple as possible: one fob, one button, no fuss. The gate had to feel like part of the property, not an afterthought, and the automation had to be reliable enough for daily family use.

Our Approach

Swan top softwood gates were a natural choice for the setting. The gentle rise across the top of each leaf gives them a softer, more traditional silhouette than a flat-top design, and the softwood specification keeps the price sensible compared to hardwood while still looking warm and natural against the surrounding hedgerow. With a little after-care every couple of years, softwood gates of this kind hold up nicely in the British climate.

For the automation, we specified Roger Technology above-ground operators. They’re an Italian-engineered system we trust on residential gate installations across Sussex, Kent and Surrey: robust, cleanly designed, and well-supported. Above-ground operators sit neatly on the inside of the piers and don’t need the groundworks an underground motor would require, which keeps installation tidy and cost-effective. They’re also a sensible choice for a property where the gates may need to be operated dozens of times a day in all weathers.

The Installation

We hung the gates first, making sure they sat level and closed cleanly into a neat meeting point. The Roger Technology operators were then mounted to the piers and wired into a control board, with safety photocells and edges fitted in line with the British Standard for the safe operation of automated gates. Once the system was tested and tweaked, we paired the customer’s remote key fob, walked them through the manual release in case of a power cut, and made sure they were comfortable with everyday operation before we left.

A Simple Project, Done Properly

For a country property in Piltdown, Uckfield, Crowborough or anywhere in this part of East Sussex, automated swan top gates often hit the sweet spot between three things people care about most: security, style and convenience. The timber feels right for the setting, the swan top adds character without being fussy, and the Roger Technology automation means the family can come and go without a second thought. It also gives us a system we know we can service and maintain properly for the long term, which is part of how we work: a gate is a relationship, not a one-off sale.
