The Challenge

The landlord wanted to bring some real security back to the entrance for their tenant, but money was tight. The existing posts had rotted through and were no longer holding the gate true; the gate itself had seen better days, and the entrance lights had come loose during the years of wear. Together, we decided the best option was a manual 5-bar gate. The brief was simple: keep this property in Rotherfield secure, do it sensibly, and don’t dress it up with anything the tenant didn’t need.

Our Approach

We took a look at the entrance and recommended a manual 5-bar gate in softwood. It’s a classic countryside style that suits a rural East Sussex property, and as a manual gate, it kept the cost down without compromising on security or kerb appeal. Softwood is the budget-friendly choice in our wooden gates range, and with a little after-care every year or two, it will hold up nicely for a long time. We talked to the landlord through the options, agreed on a specification, and booked the work in.

The Installation

On the day, our team removed the rotten posts and dug in a fresh pair, set straight, plumbed properly and concreted in to take the weight of the new gate over the long term. Once the posts had set, we hung the 5-bar gate, levelled it, and made sure it swung cleanly in both directions and latched without a wrestle. With the gate in place, we reinstated the existing entrance lights to ensure the driveway would still be properly lit at night. Small details, but the kind that turn a tired-looking entrance into one a tenant feels properly looked after by.

A Simple Project, Done Properly

This kind of work is bread and butter for our team. There’s no underground motor, no intercom, no fancy access controls. Just a well-chosen gate, well-fitted posts, and a tidy reinstall of the lights. For a landlord on a tight budget who needs a job done once, properly, with no surprises, that’s often the right answer.

  • James and Paul have done a wonderful job installing our two new sets of electric gates and secure fencing. We can’t rate Sussex Gate Services highly enough. They have a great work ethic and pay attention to detail and aesthetic. After-care is also good with the guys coming out twice to adjust the sensors and plug gaps in the fencing that the dog found and escaped through! We’ve even asked them to come back and quote for fencing in the rear garden. I would highly recommend this local company.
