The Challenge – Iroko hardwood gate

An equestrian facility in Haywards Heath contacted us looking for a durable, secure, and easy-to-use gate system to manage regular vehicle and horse access. The entrance needed to withstand constant use, provide hands-free exit, and match the character of the rural surroundings. The client specifically requested a hardwood gate that would offer long-term performance with minimal maintenance, alongside a fully automated system suited to the busy nature of the facility.

Our Approach

We recommended a made-to-measure Iroko hardwood gate, known for its natural strength, density, and ability to resist weathering. Iroko hardwood is particularly well-suited to high-traffic environments like equestrian yards, where a strong and visually appealing gate is essential. Its rich grain and durability make it a practical choice for outdoor automated gate installations, offering both appearance and performance.

For automation, we selected Roger Technology’s below-ground gate operators. These were ideal for keeping all mechanical components hidden, resulting in a clean and unobtrusive finish. To manage access, we installed a digital keypad at the entrance for secure code-based entry. For exiting the property, we fitted a vehicle road loop beneath the surface, allowing automatic opening as vehicles approach from inside. This type of setup is especially effective at equestrian properties, where the convenience of automated exit improves daily workflow for staff and visitors.

We also made sure the gate’s proportions and style were appropriate for the entrance width, while maintaining the strength required to cope with heavy usage. Every detail of the automation system was chosen to suit the specific needs of the site, balancing reliability, security, and ease of use.

The Installation

The Iroko hardwood gate was manufactured to precise measurements and treated with a protective oil to highlight its natural grain and help preserve its colour over time. The timber’s dense structure ensures excellent resistance to wear and the elements, making it one of the most reliable options for an electric gate installation in a rural or equestrian setting.

The Roger Technology below-ground automation was carefully installed to ensure smooth, quiet gate movement. All cabling and control units were neatly housed and protected, maintaining a clean and tidy appearance. The digital keypad was mounted in a convenient location at the entrance, providing secure and straightforward access without the need for remote controls. The vehicle road loop was calibrated to ensure prompt and consistent gate opening from within the property, making departure seamless for vehicles and horseboxes alike.

This Iroko hardwood gate installation in Haywards Heath demonstrates how traditional materials and modern automation can be combined to create a smart, robust solution for agricultural and equestrian entrances. As with all our automated gate installations, we carried out thorough testing and handed over a fully operational system designed for reliable daily use.

Latest From Our Clients

  • James and Paul recently installed some electric entrance gates which we are extremely pleased with. They were very professional and very thorough. Cannot recommend them enough.

    Pauline Tunna

  • James and Paul have done a wonderful job installing our two new sets of electric gates and secure fencing. We can’t rate Sussex Gate Services highly enough. They have a great work ethic and pay attention to detail and aesthetic. After-care is also good with the guys coming out twice to adjust the sensors and plug gaps in the fencing that the dog found and escaped through! We’ve even asked them to come back and quote for fencing in the rear garden. I would highly recommend this local company.
