Budget-Friendly, Without Cutting Corners

Not everyone wants, or needs, a heavy set of hardwood or aluminium gates, and that’s completely fine. Plenty of homes in rural East Sussex suit a simpler field gate, and a softwood one keeps the cost down while still looking right at the end of a country drive.

Choosing softwood over hardwood brings the price down, and a five-bar field design is honest and uncomplicated to build and fit. You’re not paying for anything you don’t need, and you still get a gate that closes across your entrance and adds a sense of privacy and security to the property.

Countryside Look

The five-bar field gate is a familiar part of the rural scene across Sussex, and there’s a good reason it turns up on so many country driveways. It’s simple, it’s practical, and it looks completely at home against hedges, paddocks and open countryside in a way a modern metal gate sometimes doesn’t.

For this property, the style did two things at once. It gave the entrance the relaxed, rural character the customer was after, and it added a level of security by closing the driveway off. You get the look and protection in one, which is a nice balance for a country home.

Adding Automation

A field gate can be automated just like a grander set of gates, which does sometimes surprise people. We fitted a motor and controls so the customer can open and close the gate without getting out of the car, and that ease is the convenience most people really want once they’ve lived with gates for a while.

Automating a lighter softwood gate is generally kinder on the motor too, and it means you get the day-to-day ease of an automatic entrance on a gate that didn’t break the bank. It’s a good example of security, style and convenience arriving together on a modest budget.

The Durability of Softwood

Softwood is a sensible choice when you’re watching the budget, and treated and looked after, it gives good service outdoors for many years. It won’t have quite the lifespan of a dense hardwood like Iroko, and that’s the trade-off for the lower price, but plenty of our customers are more than happy with softwood for a field-style gate.

A little care goes a long way. Keeping the timber treated and having the gate and motor checked over now and then keeps everything working and looking well, and our maintenance and repairs service is great if you’d rather leave that to us.

The Result

The customer got exactly what they set out for. A country-style entrance, a bit more security and privacy, and the ease of opening the gate from the car, all without the outlay of a top-end set of gates. For a rural East Sussex home on a budget, it’s a combination that’s hard to argue with.

If a budget-friendly, automated 5-bar field gate sounds right for your East Sussex home, we’d be happy to talk it over and find something that suits your driveway and your budget. Call us on 01825 705160, email info@sussexgateservices.co.uk, or fill out our contact form.

Is a softwood field gate much cheaper than hardwood?

Generally, yes. Softwood costs less than a hardwood like Iroko, which brings the overall price down. You trade a little longevity for the saving, but it’s a popular choice for field-style gates where budget matters.

Can any field gate be automated?

Most can. We fit a motor and controls suited to the gate, and lighter softwood gates automate nicely. We’d check your gate and entrance first and let you know the best way to set it up.

Will an automated 5 bar field gate still add security?

It will. Any gate that closes across your driveway adds privacy and a layer of security, and automating it means it stays shut until you choose to open it, whether you’re at home or heading out.
