The Challenge

The client needed a gate that could keep pace with a working yard. The entrance had to manage regular vehicle and horsebox access, provide hands-free exit for staff and visitors, and stand up to heavy daily use – all while suiting the character of the rural surroundings. Long-term durability and minimal maintenance were key priorities.

Our Approach

We recommended an Iroko hardwood gate made to measure for the entrance. Iroko is one of the most dependable hardwoods for outdoor use – naturally dense, resistant to weathering, and well-suited to high-traffic environments where a gate needs to look good and take punishment in equal measure.

For automation, Roger Technology‘s below-ground operators were the right choice, keeping all mechanical components hidden beneath the surface for a clean, uncluttered finish. Entry was handled by a digital keypad – simple, secure, and no remote controls to lose. For exit, we fitted an in-ground vehicle road loop, allowing the gate to open automatically as vehicles approach from within. For a working yard with staff, horses, and horseboxes moving in and out throughout the day, a hands-free exit makes a genuine difference to daily workflow.

The Installation

The Iroko gate was manufactured to precise measurements and treated with a protective oil to add to the natural grain and protect the timber against the elements. The Roger Technology below-ground automation was installed with all cabling and control units neatly concealed, keeping the entrance looking tidy and well finished.

The digital keypad was mounted at a convenient roadside position for both drivers and pedestrians. The vehicle exit loop was calibrated for prompt, consistent operation – particularly important for larger vehicles and horseboxes that need reliable clearance on departure.

The result is a robust, well-considered entrance that handles the demands of an active equestrian property without compromising on appearance or reliability.

  • James and Paul have done a wonderful job installing our two new sets of electric gates and secure fencing. We can’t rate Sussex Gate Services highly enough. They have a great work ethic and pay attention to detail and aesthetic. After-care is also good with the guys coming out twice to adjust the sensors and plug gaps in the fencing that the dog found and escaped through! We’ve even asked them to come back and quote for fencing in the rear garden. I would highly recommend this local company.
